Anonymization

Academic paper figures

Export de-identified images and metadata for academic publication.

Problem

You need to generate publication-quality figures from DICOM images for an academic paper. The images must be anonymized (no PHI overlays), window/level adjusted for optimal tissue contrast, and exported in a standard image format (PNG/TIFF/JPEG).

Steps

  1. Open the DICOM file — click Open files… (⌘O).
  2. Adjust window/level — use the WL tool or the mouse scroll wheel to set optimal tissue contrast for your figure.
  3. Anonymize if needed — switch to Anon mode (⌘2) and apply PHI scrubbing. Enable Clean Pixel Data to remove any burned-in text from the image.
  4. Bake the window/level — use Pixel Operations (⌘P) to permanently apply the current WL to the pixel data.
  5. Export as image — use the Export menu to convert the series to PNG/TIFF/JPEG. Choose a resolution appropriate for print or digital publication.
  6. Verify — open the exported image and confirm no PHI text remains, contrast is publication-ready, and dimensions match the expected output size.

Expected Result

  • Exported image has no PHI overlays (burned-in text is removed).
  • Window/level settings are baked into the output pixel values.
  • Image dimensions match the original DICOM frame size.
  • PNG output is lossless; JPEG output has configurable quality.
  • The exported file is suitable for academic publication.
